Overview

Working from home in a spare bedroom or at the kitchen table creates blurred boundaries between work and personal life. The HEMU Acoustics Backyard Office Pod provides a physically separate, acoustically isolated, and thermally comfortable workspace in your own garden — without a planning permit in most jurisdictions (under 15 m² footprint).

Unlike indoor office pods that rely on HVAC from the host building, the Backyard Pod is a self-contained structure. Double-glazed windows (Uw 1.4 W/m²K) and PIR-core insulated roof panels (R-3.5 / RSI 0.62) maintain interior temperature year-round with a compact heat pump/mini-split unit. Exterior surfaces carry IP65 weatherproofing to resist rain, UV, humidity, and temperatures from –25 °C to +60 °C.

Acoustic performance centres on STC 38 composite wall panels with an outer weather-resistant fibre cement skin, 100 mm mineral wool fill, and inner perforated acoustic liner. A standard exterior ambient noise of 55 dB(A) (suburban daytime) is attenuated to below 20 dB(A) inside — equivalent to a whisper.

The pod ships as a flat-pack kit and can be assembled on a concrete or compacted gravel base in 2–3 days by two people. All structural connections use marine-grade stainless steel fixings. The interior is pre-wired with a consumer unit, lighting circuits, and multiple outlet positions before shipping — a licensed electrician connects the incoming mains supply on site.

Key Features

STC 38 All-Weather Acoustic Walls

Triple-layer composite wall panel: 8 mm fibre cement exterior board, 100 mm mineral wool acoustic fill (density 40 kg/m³), 12 mm perforated acoustic gypsum board interior. STC 38 performance verified to ASTM E90. Exterior skin is UV-stable, moisture-resistant, and paintable.

IP65 Weatherproof Envelope

All panel joints use EPDM compression seals rated IP65. Roof carries a torch-applied EPDM waterproof membrane with 50-year lifespan. Recessed window frames prevent water ingress. Tested to 100 mm/hour simulated rain and 160 km/h wind pressure.

R-3.5 Thermal Insulation Package

PIR-core insulated roof cassettes (R-3.5 / RSI 0.62) combined with mineral wool wall fill (R-3.0) create a well-insulated envelope. In conjunction with double-glazed windows (Uw 1.4 W/m²K), a 1.5 kW mini-split unit maintains interior comfort from –15 °C to +40 °C exterior temperature.

Pre-Wired Electrical Installation

Consumer unit with RCD protection, 6× dual power outlets, 2× USB-C (65W) charging stations, dedicated lighting circuit, and 16 A supply for mini-split HVAC. All wiring installed and tested before shipping — site electrician only needs to connect the incoming supply cable.

Double-Glazed Low-E Windows

Aluminium-framed double-glazed windows with low-E inner pane (Uw 1.4 W/m²K). Corner window configuration allows natural cross-ventilation. Acoustic performance of the glazing unit: Rw 32 dB. Optional triple-glazing for higher acoustic performance.

Flat-Pack Kit Assembly (2–3 Days)

All panels and components ship flat on a single pallet. Assembly requires two people, basic hand tools, and a concrete or compacted gravel base (included base design). Marine-grade 316 SS structural fixings resist corrosion in coastal environments for 25+ years.
