Overview
Industrial fans and blowers are among the most persistent sources of workplace and community noise. Without acoustic treatment, a 400 kW centrifugal blower can generate 95–105 dB(A) at 1 m — requiring PPE for all nearby workers and potentially violating local environmental noise limits.
HEMU Acoustics Fan & Blower Noise Enclosures are engineered around the specific aerodynamic requirements of the fan system. Unlike generic acoustic boxes, our enclosures are designed to maintain the fan's performance curve while achieving maximum noise reduction. Airflow enters and exits through acoustically lined splitter silencer ducts that provide 15–20 dB(A) insertion loss at the air openings — the dominant noise path for fan enclosures.
The enclosure shell typically achieves 30–35 dB(A) insertion loss on the direct transmission path (ISO 11546-1). Combined with the silencer ducts, overall radiated noise reduction of 15–25 dB(A) is achievable, depending on fan type, speed, and frequency content.
Enclosure panels are fabricated in hot-dip galvanised steel (1.5–3 mm) with a 50 mm mineral wool acoustic lining. Access doors provide entry for maintenance without requiring enclosure disassembly. All duct, conduit, and cable penetrations are sealed with acoustic putty pads to prevent acoustic short-circuit.
Vibration isolation is integral to the design: anti-vibration mounts under the fan baseplate and flexible acoustic expansion joints on duct connections prevent structure-borne noise transmission to the building frame.
Key Features
15–25 dB(A) Overall Noise Reduction
Combined enclosure + duct silencer system delivers 15–25 dB(A) reduction in overall A-weighted sound pressure level at 1 m. Actual reduction depends on fan noise spectrum and installation geometry. Acoustic performance verified by ISO 3744 sound power measurement before and after enclosure installation.
Lined Splitter Silencer Ducts
All air inlet and outlet penetrations use acoustically lined splitter silencer sections. Mineral wool-lined splitters with perforated steel facing achieve 15–20 dB(A) insertion loss without significantly increasing duct pressure drop (ΔP < 15 Pa per metre of silencer). Custom silencer sizing for each airflow condition.
Anti-Vibration Mounting Package
Spring anti-vibration mounts under the fan baseplate (natural frequency 3–5 Hz) isolate motor and impeller vibration from the floor structure. Flexible acoustic expansion joints on all duct connections prevent vibration bridging. Combined system achieves > 20 dB vibration reduction at blade pass frequency.
Hinged Acoustic Access Doors
Heavy-duty hinged access doors with 3-point locking and acoustic foam perimeter seal. Door sizes up to 1200 × 2100 mm standard. Inspection windows (double-glazed acoustic) available. Doors maintain enclosure IL within 2 dB of panel performance when closed.
Full Electrical and Controls Access
Motor junction boxes, VFD panels, temperature sensors, and service valves are all reachable from outside the enclosure through dedicated acoustic gland penetrations. No electrical work inside the enclosure is required for routine maintenance tasks.
ISO 11546-Rated Construction
All enclosure designs are prepared to ISO 11546-1 (field measurement of insertion loss) criteria. As-built insertion loss measurements are carried out during commissioning and documented in the project handover report.
